Got a lemon, with no way to return it
I’ve talked to Garmin for hours and they can’t figure out what’s wrong with my brand new watch. But it doesn’t record sleep well, only works 1 out of every 7 or 8 days- and it is really bulky. It also says I’m climbing stairs while driving. Super disappointed in this item, I was hoping it would be a great upgrade from my Apple Watch.

Software to connect to watch it terrible
First the good news. The color display on the Epix Pro Gen 2 is gorgeous. You can actually see map detail. The functionality of this watch is incredible. The GPS also picks up Galileo and the new US GPS signals. It can store your location every second on a hike. It can record an ECG (aka EKG). It can measure blood oxygen. But the usability of the Epix Pro and the usability of the PC software for the watch are terrible. When I first got the watch it took me hours to get all the notifications turned off. It’s like the watch was constantly bugging me to exercise, or read some status it was giving me, or relax (I can’t remember what all the notifications were…but they were annoying). Once I got all that turned off I wanted to go for a walk and then upload a GPX file of the path to my computer. Good luck with that. I installed Garmin Express on my PC (it doesn’t appear you can do this from the iPhone App. And why are there two iPHone apps ?) For some reason, every time Garmin Express runs a folder shows up on my desktop called GPUcache. I have no idea what that is. I tried to connect my watch but the PC app kept hanging. The Garmin web site is no help. I eventually figured out that the watch wanted to talk to my home WIFI and I needed to enter my WIFI password. Why the watch needs WIFI to connect to my PC over a USB cable I have no idea. Nowhere on the Garmin Express screen or watch screen does it tell you why the connect process is hanging. Speaking of passwords, I’ve now entered my Garmin password over 10 times in the last 3 hours trying to get the GPX file out of my watch. Each time Garmin sends an email with a code I then have to enter. How do I turn off 2-factor authentication? OK, so eventually I figure out I have to get Express to open a web page called Garmin Connect if I want the GPX file off my watch. Oh, and I have to log in again, and have Garmin send me a code to my email, and enter that. Why do I have to go to a web page to get data off my watch? I couldn’t find the GPX file so I went to ChatGPT which explained where to find it. It’s under activities. Once you find your hike, and find the export button (you click on Export CSV to get to a menu that lets your export GPX or CSV), it will create a file. The watched tracked my route well, but there’s a bogus first couple of points from out in the field to my front door that shouldn’t be at the beginning of the log. I started the hike in front of my house, walked around, and returned to my house in a loop. I did this test twice, and the second time there were no bogus points attached to the front of the hike. Oh…Garmin Express wanted to update my maps. That’s fine. It took 2 hours to download the maps, then another hour to upload them to the watch. If the upload to the watch is going to be so slow, why not overlap these two processes? And when it was all done and I disconnected the watch from the PC, the watch kept saying it was downloading maps (it was not). After pressing a bunch of random buttons I got the watch to go back to watch mode.
Another nit is that when I wear the watch, if my wrist bends back, like to push a door open, it pushes the buttons on the right of the watch and kicks off different apps and menus. Annoying. Another annoying this is if you take the watch off and set it on your dresser at night, the green light on the back keeps flashing. So I just put my watch in my top dresser drawer when I’m sleeping. Summary: this watch is full of amazing technology. The usability of the watch and the PC software is terrible. Oh….and you need two iOS apps, Garmin Connect and Garmin Connect IQ. Why this is not just one app is beyond me. The partitioning of functionality between the two is arbitrary, so if you want to do something, just start Garmin Connect. If what you want to do isn’t there, then start Connect IQ.
